The sushi is OK, but not outstanding. We had the edamame dumplings, fancy veggie roll, sake poki roll, and superman roll. The edamame dumplings were delicious and so was the superman roll. We particularly liked the roasted red pepper on top of the superman roll.

C.y. best server ever!!! Request him!! When it is busy, service isn't all that. But the food is great. I always get the sashimi platter plus a couple of other things and everything is fantaatic. The yaki udon is really good.

The sushi seems different from when I first started eating here. Now it seems the food and service is a hit or miss. Still a decent sushi place.

Atmosfere here is real good, food and service is also good but little bit overpriced for grand junction

The fish here is very fresh. We used to be regular customers, at least twice weekly, but now whenever we come in there are always signs of decline. We waited 10 minutes at the front before we were even acknowledged. Several tables were open but hadn't been bussed. A few people walked out because the wait was so long. The spice powder is now added to the Bizarro AND Superman when it only used to be added to the Superman. It is not noted on the menu for the Bizarro. It is an okay option for sushi if you don't mind slow service and a long wait for the sushi. Prices are average. There is a parking lot in the back.

Myself, my girlfriend and 2 friends came here on a Saturday night. After the hostess putting us on the list with a 20 minute wait, we decided to walk main street returning after about 10 minutes. Upon return, the hostess had crossed us off the list. Once we she had found our crossed off name she seated us about 5 minutes later. THEN after bringing us our menus she comes back to our table and tells us she made a mistake and a party of 3 had been before us, and she had to give the table back to them. She told us she would put us back back on the list. We declined. Horrendous service. Never coming back here again!

My family and I ate dinner here on a Saturday for my birthday. The amount of people waiting for the doors to open was very encouraging. I suggest that you arrive early or call ahead. The food was quite lovely. My boyfriend loved the scallop rolls out of all of their sushi options. It's definitely a hot spot to eat at here in Grand Junction.

Certainly the best sushi place in Grand Junction. Still not the greatest sushi place all around, but the fish is fairly fresh. Service is rather slow. The roll options are pretty good. If I'm in Grand Junction and feel like sushi, it is worth heading down to Seuhiro

We were surprised to find such a good sushi/Japanese restaurant in GJ. Our favorite item was the Tokyo peach roll, which used in season Palisade peaches with fresh fish and some nice spice. Wonderful! Also liked the prices, which are in the bargain range. While the sashimi maguro and shake were fresh, they were served with no sauce except the soy. Found that disappointing. Liked the fried tofu, but found the fried calamari appetizer chewy and probably previously frozen. Reasonable wine and beer list, decently priced. Given the location, the decor with the new front, and the overall experience = 4 stars. Probably 3 stars in the big city.

First, the Hostess was so efficient and kind with all the crowds that came. She let us know how long the wait and how it was progressing! She was a hit. The waiter didn't come with the bill and she took care of getting it and processing. Not enough wait staff for the amount of people! As seniors we did not sit at the Traditional setting. We got a table! Let the younger set get up and down! The food was excellent!

Very happy with my meal. We ate at the sushi bar and had very good service. I was, however, very surprised at how busy they were from the moment of opening at lunch! We ordered a la carte sushi. A little surprised that we needed to order from the waiter instead of directly with the chef - or using a paper sushi list. But it worked well. I love tamago (the egg omelet). Many times this is a pre-purchased bland item. Here it is home made and it was very fresh and so delicious and delicate. Thanks for that. The nigiri sushi is not cut to order at lunch, but it was clearly recently and generously cut. The rolls (salmon skin and salmon poke) were done nicely, but to me the nigiri was much nicer. We saw another customer eating hamachi kama and were very jealous. Now we know to ask. Nice thing is that everything here is very fresh. I never order uni unless I am in a location where people order it frequently. Fresh, it is one of the treats of the world. Day old - it is nasty. This was fresh. I was very happy to have a fun, interactive and tasty place to have sushi in Grand Junction. They don't have as large a selection as I am used to - but I like that I can depend on what they have being fresh! They do serve a lot of what are to me "crazy rolls" - I guess I should just call them creative. But - hey - that is what a lot of people seem to enjoy. So - good for them. Me, I will stick to the classics. But - I like that they offer stuff I like and stuff that get people excited about sushi!

I'm giving this place a 4 because the sushi wasn't well assembled (meaning it fell apart quite easily), and the sushi was much more "mushy" than what I'm used to having. If that makes sense? Overall, the food was good and the waitress was very friendly. The sushi came out in a timely manner. We may try this place again sometime but more than likely will venture to other sushi restaurants, first.

Excellent meal and the prices were fair. I had the ginger scallops and salmon sushi. I highly recommend this restaurant. The service was excellent and the food came out fast. Very good place.

Mediocre food sometimes is better when the service and waiter staff make the difference. Well the waiters at this place did t help the mediocrity!

The two stars is regarding the food, not the service which was very good and the ambience which is very pleasing. The Gyozas were adequate but the sauce was very salty. My wife loves sukiyaki which should include thin sliced beef that is tender. Her dish had chunks of beef which were very tough. I ordered the curried pork. The sauce was tasteless and the pork was literally swimming in sauce. I can't speak to the sushi because we did not order any. But I don't think we will be returning to this restaurant.

Good sushi & liked the variety of rolls - service was slow & miso soup was served cold - I felt the atmosphere was okay but definitely have been to much better run sushi restaurants, but for a smaller town it's a solid 4 star. Enjoyed the Poison Ivy roll the best!

I got takeout from here. First off, the phone call: had to call 2 times. No one answered first 1. It rang and rang. Parking downtown is always a nightmare. When I got into the restaurant I had no idea where to go. I had to fight my way through everyone waiting for a table. Ended up walking towards the back to track down an employee to find my order. Turns out you're supposed to pick up take out at the bar, in the very back, which the guy didn't mention when I called in. When I gave them my name, they walked over and found my order- sitting out under other styrofoam takeout boxes. I have no idea how long it had been there. I had called 45 mins earlier and had been given an hour wait to pick up as the kitchen was slammed. So even though I was early, my sushi was ready for who knows how long. Anyway I was told my total which was way expensive for my specialty roll (Sunset) and a simple spicy tuna. I paid- not tipping because I was beyond pissed at that point having to wait 5 mins for them to run my card and bring me my receipt to sign all while my sushi continued to sit there! I stood (no seats available) awkwardly at the bar with other patrons who were obviously just as uncomfortable as I was because some middle age guy had been served long after he should have been cut off and was hitting on some newly legal girls. I left and took my food home only to find roe on my spicy tuna roll which had not been listed on the menu and has never been on a roll like that before. Not what I was expecting or wanted. Both rolls were haphazardly cut in different sizes that made some of them unmanageable and everything was just sloppy. I didn't enjoy them at all and didn't finish them despite their pricy cost.

Can I just say this is one of my favorite restaurants in town!!! I love the noodle dishes all the way to the speciality sushi rolls! My favorite is the mango tango, I could eat those all day. My only complaints would be more seating, the wait can be unbearable sometimes. They would definitely benefit from a bigger place even though I love the location. Remodel looks good opened it up a bit. I have to say this is my favorite sushi place in junction.

Sad to say, we had a very mediocre experience. The food was good, but it couldn't make up for the apathetic, unmanaged service we received. The service was just so terrible. Meal is supposed to be served with soup, we had to ask for it after the apps were delivered. No water. No pre-bussing. No small plates to share sushi. No trays for soy sauce (I finally had to just get up myself to get these from the server station). Hard to get anyone's attention, but not because they seemed busy, but because they were all hanging out chatting with each other (except one young gentleman who seemed to be doing most of the work). Watched food sit in the window while servers hung out. Just a bummer.

As a GJ local, Suehiro's is our sushi restaurant of choice! My husband and I love sushi and Suehiro's has the best in town. We often switch between No Coast and Suehiro's, but the fish and rolls seem fresher at Suehiro's. Also, who wouldn't love a stroll down Main Street after dinner? Perfect! I love love when they use the local famous Palisade peaches for their roll special. The atmosphere isn't the most upscale restaurant in town, but they have been doing a bunch of renovations lately.

Firstly, let me say that for a land locked state, and small town, the Japanese food here is very good. Sushi rolls are a don't! Its too American. The sashimi was expertly cut however. It was an excellent reprieve from the typical Cowboy cuisine found in GJ.

Been 3 times in last 6 months. Had to wait 5 -15 minutes each time. Worth the wait. Good food, plenty on the plate, good menu variety, reasonable prices. That's all that I want.

Went with a few friends on a Saturday night. First, let me say the food is good enough to warrant coming back. Between myself and my friends, I had the Age Ika (calamari appetizer), K.A. roll, H.I.C. roll, yakisoba, and dynamite shrimp - and of course a little starter bowl of miso soup. Everything was absolutely delicious, except the calamari which was a little on the chewy side, but not terribly so. BUT we received our entrees all at different times (probably a solid 10 minutes between the first roll of sushi and the yakisoba) which is a huge pet peeve, since no one in my group wanted to chow down before another got the chance, though we were all starving. Maybe five or ten minutes after we got our sushi, we finally got our appetizers. To summarize: horrible timing. Service was friendly enough, but we kind of felt rushed out. Like I said, I'll be back, but I'll probably try to aim for a very quiet time of day, since service is so lacking - when it's busy at least.

I ordered a sushi roll that was listed as containing crab, but the dish I got actually contained"krab," that fake-crab stuff made out of some kind of fish with bright red food coloring in it. Blech. The waitress blamed whoever printed the menus for the discrepancy, saying all the menus are being reprinted to say they use imitation krab. The whole reason we went here was because this place was supposed to be synonymous with quality. We also experienced problems with the timing of the food delivery at Suehiro. My husband got his entire meal minutes before I got mine. We were disappointed this visit.

I was in GJ for a conference early May of 2013, and our group found this place down the street from our hotel. Since moving to the Denver area from the Dallas area a few years ago, I haven't found many sushi restaurants that wowed me. This place did. First of all, their white tuna (shiro maguro) was actually Escolar, a true rarity as most places just go with the cheaper and much less delicious Albacore for their white tuna. I ordered 4 pieces of this as nigiri. I also ordered the spicy tuna roll, Negihama roll (yellowtail&scallion) and the Rainbow roll (Tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and avocado). The fish was all fresh and had no fish-smell. Everything was delicious! They didn't go overboard with sauces like some places do (*cough cough Hapa). The basic rolls were rice-outside and the same size as the special rolls, something that is a big deal in my book. The ONLY reason I didnt give Suehiro 5 stars is because I feel like the place could have been a bit cleaner. It was by no means a dump, but just seemed a bit on the messy side. I will definitely make this place a must-visit for our annual conference in GJ.

Stopped by this place while traveling cross country and was pretty impressed. I usually worry a bit about fish quality the more inland/east ward I head in the US, but this place had deliciously fresh fish and equally fantastic decor. Authentic ambiance, floor, table and bar seating, along with really quick service granted this joint four stars! Wouldn't have found it without Yelp!

Maybe caught them on a bad day but here it goes. 25 minute wait, no hostess. 3 different servers asked me the same seating preference question. Finally get seated, server brings me a beer after ordering, which took 10 minutes. 25 minutes goes by before my order is taken. My sashimi platter comes out fast but had to send my spicy scallop back because it smelled more fishy than raw scallops should. Not sure if they were bad but taking into consideration the generally poor management, and likely poor food quality management, I didn't take any chances. Place was busy but they had an army of servers that were either stoned, inexperienced, or just plain needed to find new jobs. Might chance it again if I'm ever straight up craving sushi while in GJ but probably not. Place is highly overrated, maybe on a good night 2 stars.

This place has been a favorite of mine for a long time! Outstanding food, outstanding service, hardly any wait time even when it is busy! This is probably the best sushi I've ever had, and I've had sushi in many fresh fish places such as Florida.

Eh... wasn't impressed. Went after the main lunch rush, but still stood in the very narrow doorway for almost 10 minutes. Employees walked by over and over without paying the least bit of attention to us standing there. When we did get seated, the waiter was pretty attentive, but it seems a little late after being ignored. The food was average, but nothing extraordinary. I know they are somehow tied with No Coast Sushi and I like No coast. Won't be coming back to this one.

When my work colleague said to meet him at the "sushi restaurant on 5th and Main" because he heard it was "good" I was VERY skeptical. Good sushi in Grand Junction? Maybe steak .. but sushi? Wow did I literally eat my words! Suehiro rivals Sushi Den in Denver. Super fresh, inventive and a good atmosphere. Could be a little less brightly lit, but the food overshadowed any negative thought I could have had. My colleague asked the waiter to have the chef bring us his favorites and we had the best meal I've had in a long time. - and I just had sushi in Santa Barbara, CA a few weeks ago! Don't miss their seaweed ships with spicy crab (not too spicy so don't worry if you don't like spicy food), the spicy tuna/avocado roll and their sliced ahi plate with avocado and ride is just fantastic. I ate myself silly!!! Their drinks are good too - the Ninza - a blue frothy drink with pineapple juice and vodka was refreshing and reminded me of a pina colada. YUM ALL AROUND - DON'T MISS SUEHIRO!!

This is the worst sushi I've ever had. The counters and the glasses given to us were both dirty. The quality of fish was horrible. I'll give them credit for the Yellow tail but do not get it in a roll. We ordered the HIC roll which was supposed to have smoked oysters in it. The roll came out and it did not come with the oysters. When we asked the sushi chef about why they weren't in there, he said they were. They weren't. We asked for a side of the oysters and he served those and warned us that they were really strong. They were from a can, and were horrible. We also ordered the Fancy veggie roll that was supposed to include hummus, we were served that and it did not include the hummus. He initially said they didn't have but then came out with a large container and put some in a small dish for us. We were treated as if we didn't know anything about what we were ordering (we eat sushi a min of 10+ times per mo.). When the check came out we were charged for items we did not receive. The service, sushi chef, and overall experience was one of the worst I've had. They were totally rude when we asked why all the ingredients were not being included in what we ordered. We left and "redid" dinner after this experience. So many choices on Main, take your dollars somewhere else.

We were on a road trip for about a week before we ate at this restaurant. We arrived at about 1 pm and waited a long time to be seated. The restaurant closes at 2 pm. Although the restaurant had a few empty tables, they seemed short of staff so we had to wait again for our orders to be taken. By the time we were done with lunch, it was about 2:05 pm. We left the restaurant and were on the road for about an hour when we realised that we had forgotten the camera that we left on the table. We called Suehiro right away and a lady picked up the phone. She told us the restaurant was closed and that other customers may have taken the camera but will check with the staff as well. We were told to call back at 5:30 pm when the restaurant re-opened. Finally, we spoke to the manager, Steve, who promised he will follow up with the staff and update us on the camera. Well, Steve never bothered to call and we had to call from the road (since we were still travelling) everyday to see if anyone had turned in the camera. We told Steve that because the restaurant was closing when we left Suehiro, he should check with the busboy or waiter who cleared the table. He never called us back. We had to call everyday to see if he had spoken to his staff. Finally, Ms. Suehiro, the owner herself, returned my call to tell me we were "harassing" her office and she will call the police. Seriously??? Is this how you treat your customers? We lost our camera with our vacation pics and you want to call the police on us because we call you ONCE a day to follow up ? Suehiro, you don't deserve to be in business. Your overall service sucks. You've got bad attitude toward your customers. Will never ever patronise your restaurant ...You have been totally UNHELPFUL! This incident in your restaurant marred an otherwise fun road trip for the whole family.

  • Sarah Ann B.

As to Suehiro's service; they could use another server or maybe a hostess to help get drinks, miso, n the like. Several times I've been here, the service has been so slow. I get that it sucks having an extra server on when it's not busy, but it just makes the establishment look unprepared when two people are trying to wrangle the entire dining room during lunch or dinner rush. That alone makes me want to give them 2 stars, BUT, one thing sways me otherwise: Salmon Nigiri is $4.50 here as apposed to $7.00 at No Coast, but they don't give you an extra piece of Salmon when you order Sashimi... kind of a bummer, but understandable. That's still a good price for what you get, so I'll give them another star for that. As to my last visit; I was pretty unimpressed with the Scooby Snack I had, it was kind of wet and boring. Also, the Dynamite Shrimp was way too heavy on the mayonnaise and drowned my rice. My mother had the Salmon Nigiri, and it was just as it always has been... The miso has also been consistently good. I have had better luck here, so I don't plan on throwing the baby out with the bath water. I'll Terminator it later. P.S. They have a nice private feeling bar in the back behind the server station that took me forever to find, but was happy when I did. It's kind of nice being hidden back there, and it's much easier to get faster service when all the servers and bartenders back there.

Can you give 0 stars?? Worst service ever!!! Quoted a 30-40 minute wait, went for a walk and came back about 25 minutes later. Asked the host where we were on the wait and her reply was we don't have your name!! She continued to argue with us about not taking reservations, and than made a comment about people being retarded!! That should have been our cue to go elsewhere!! Finally we are sat, but the service continues to go downhill.... The server, unfortunately didn't catch a name, literally rolls his eyes every time he came to the table like we were bothering him!! We ordered appetizers, one came the other was lost in la la land. Than our entrees come 30 seconds after our app...... When we are finished he comes up and asks if we received our missing appetizer!! And then leaves us sitting there to make a new one?? We didn't want it now!!! Than the host comes over and removes EVERYTHING at our table even the water we are drinking and we haven't even paid!!! Wowza!! Will never return!!!

Hit or miss service, hit or miss food. This use to be the best sushi bar in GJ but now seems to be inconsistent with both the food and service. Vegan tip: can get good veggie sushi depending on the day.

It used to be the only sushi place in town, but then came No Coast. Suehire suffered for a little while but I think they've found their own little groove. They haven't changed much, but they stay more towards the traditional side. As for their rolls, the Scooby Snack is great, but the Hulk was only so so. My kids love to come here and sit at the "tables on the ground". They have good miso and edamame. They will make special rolls, such as a sweet potato roll for my 6 year old. It's not the cleanest of places, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. I don't like using the restroom here and many times the floor, especially near the bar, is sticky.

    (3)
  • LA M.

Good sushi, and MUCH nicer atmosphere than No Coast. I opted for the bar given the mentions of bad service, and while the table behind me did seem to have a waitress with an attitude, the two sushi chefs at the bar were very nice and attentive, even making me a few rolls after they'd put out the closed sign. Great low-key option if you are staying in old town and don't want to drive.

I love this place, but I want to first put out a disclaimer...I don't eat sushi, sooooooo I'm not basing my rating on the sushi. That being said, when I used to live in Newport I loved to frequent a yummy restaurant there called Nagisa. They are the ONLY place I've found to have the best cooked and best flavor for edamame (soy beans). I've had some that come out cold or disgustingly wet, and I am happy to say that the edamame here at Suehiro's is soooo similar to Nagisa's which is very authentic Japanese-style. I know it sounds silly, but it's hard to find good edamame. That alone made me smitten with them! Some edamame even tastes or smells fishy...disgusting! The fact that they have udon noodles and other dishes I wouldn't expect to see out here in GJ really made me a follower. However, know in advance, you can't come here if you are pressed for time. We have had a couple experiences where our server simply disappeared and we had to wait to pay and leave. The other cons are the seating...if it's busy you'll have to wait. They have a variety of seating, but not an abundance of it. You have your choice of the sushi bar, tables, or the tatami seating in the back, which is considered to be a somewhat authentic Japanese way of sitting, which consists of a table with a hole underneath. So you sit on the floor with your feet in the hole and your back has no support. Kinda kitchy, but hey, whatev, I just come for the food. The pros are the hot dishes. I've had the terriyaki and the udon noodle dishes, both are pretty good. My husband had some sushi...and he loved it. He's pretty picky when it comes to that stuff, so even though I can't really rate it, he was pretty pleased with its freshness.

Although the service here has taken a hit by other reviewers, it wasn't our experience that it was awful, just a tad slow. Our group of four had a wonderful dinner here, although we didn't order sushi this time. The prices can't be beat compared to Denver area equivalents. My husband and I just had water for our beverage and our tab was $24 for our dinner. Excellent value! The miso soup is served right away, like iced water, sans spoons. We figured out we should just pick it up and drink it, lol. He had the teriyaki beef and I had the mackerel (I believe it was on special) served on cabbage. Mine was grill flavored beautifully, although I was digging out a lot of bones. His was very nicely flavored and not too syrupy. Portions are very generous, and had we not been on the road, we would have taken a good portion home. I envied the sushi I saw at the surrounding tables and would not hesitate to order it next time we're in the area and can take our time at dinner. I have put this place on my reminder list when we go back to Grand Junction - for sure.

Does this sushi compare to restaurants in coastal areas? Probably not. But my meals have always been good, the fish fresh and tasty. I love the dynamite shrimp. Service is ok, nothing stellar, and the atmosphere lacks a bit, but I'll always jump at the chance to go eat sushi there!

When I lived here 2 years ago, Suehiro was the place to go if you wanted good quality sushi and good drinks. However when I went there while visiting my friends and family it felt like a totally different place. We arrived a little after 6 pm so it was pretty busy. There was no one taking names to be seated and when we finally did get seated the hostess just stood there and stared at us until one of our group members had to ask "are you taking our drink order now?" When she brought our drinks she also brought a carafe of water and a carafe of diet coke so we could help ourselves to more. She did let us know that if we ordered sushi it would take a while but that was an understatement. Each persons plate came out separately and I'm talking 15 minutes between each person's meal. They completely forgot mine until about 45 minutes later when the waitress checked on us. When we finally got all of our food and ate the waitress came and only cleared half of the plates, she didn't even ask us if we wanted anything else or if we wanted the checks, she just left. It took about another 20 minutes for us to hunt the waitress down for us to get our checks and then another 15 minutes for her to run our cards. When we finally got out it was after 930 pm. We could easily have been out in under an hour and a half. The sushi is good if you have the time to wait.

I've been here about ten times. It's fun for the kids, but let's face it, the food here is not exactly world class. It's not even Atlanta strip mall class. It's a a fun place to get into one of those tables where you get to take your shoes off but don't have to cross your legs and have a psuedo-Japanese experience. If you have children who wear tennis shoes without socks, you might want to consider a regular table or the sushi bar. The tonkatsu and noodle dishes are fine, but the sushi can be less than stellar i.e. not fresh. I might return, but I'll never order sushi here again. The yellow tail was OK but the octopus smelled worse than my son's feet.

Atmosphere is average. Sushi was very good. Try the Bizzaro roll and the Dragon roll! I would reccommend this for a casual good tasting local Sushi place. Ate there on 3/28/09

Very average to poor sushi. Ordered the dragon and bizzaro rolls based off some yelp suggestions and the dragon was good but the bizzaro made me want to vomit in my mouth. Maybe I'm being harsh as I recently moved from CA and have been spoiled by their sushi but I won't be coming back. Please tell me there is better sushi in CO.

Good sushi, the Bizzaro roll was excellent. Service was a little slow at first, but we moved to another section and got a much better server. Table tops needed to be wiped off prior to sitting down, bus staff seemed lazy, might have been stoned.

I was quite surprised there's even a Japanese restaurant in Grand Junction, but it's by no means anything spectacular. While nearly all Japanese restaurants are heavily Americanized for our pallet, this one is especially so. The atmosphere seems nice, and they offer takeout, but the food is what's to be expected in Grand Junction. Their gyoza is quite good when they have them, but avoid the curry udon unless you want watery indian curry with carrots and other basic vegetables.

Pretty good Japanese food. Was initially skeptical about japanese food in a dry valley in Colorado but I was suprised by their food. The service was okay. I order a sushi combo and was impressed with the amount that I got. Also got miso soup and a little salad. If I was craving Japanese food in GJ, I would definately come back here.
